Auditions for ‘The Trial of Dr Millicent Malville’

The action in this adult themed comedy drama takes place of a court of law, with the judge, counsels for the prosecution and defence, court officers and various witnesses. Dr Malville is accused of murdering her husband with a lethal shot of morphine.

At the start of the trial, the audience is ‘sworn in’ and at the conclusion has to decide whether they think the accused is innocent or guilty. There are, of course, two different endings to account for their decision.

The biggest roles are the two counsels, but they have the advantage of being able to hold their scripts for much of the time, as happens in court. The cast of 16 must include at least three men – the judge, the toxicologist and the lover. And at least four women – the defendant, the victim’s sister, the medical receptionist and the cleaner. All the other parts are interchangeable. There are three or four non-speaking roles, which are easy and fun to do if you haven’t been on stage before.

  • Court Orderly: Clerk of the Court: James Hassle
  • Prosecution: Sara Barnes, his junior (n/s)
  • Mary Rillington, Defence
  • Nina Ricardo, her junior (n/s)
  • Dr Millicent Malville, the accused
  • Court Guard (n/s): His Honour Judge Loosely
